And I'd need a snow-prepped Subaru to get me out of my neighborhood because the plows cannot be bothered to make it to my goddamn street . But!
I promised ScoobSTI I'd put up a couple rally car pics as a result of the following subject matter (why can't I figure out how to embed youtube videos?):
Say Anything- Shiksa (Girlfriend)
Bonus! Colin McRae's X-Games Roll
Hope you enjoy it, Scoob.

Somebody explain to my ignorant self why these are so skinny.

To go through the snow instead of on top of it.

Pretty sure they're just there for some direction in the snow/ice. The dirt rally cars have same width in front and back. I guess due to the rear wheels doing most of the work even though they seem skinny too? Meh.

Skinny tires are for snow. They dig down to the tarmac or gravel and present less frontal area to snow (which slows you down)

To dig through the soft now and let the spikes grip the ice. Recently they mandated a bit wider tires to increase snow flotation and reduce grip form the spikes hitting the ice directly.

You're basically right. Run the most narrow Winter tires possible for the best traction

Skinny tires = more pressure to dig into the snow/ice.

You're actually right. Narrow is better for these conditions since it will dig into the snow allowing it to find more traction below, rather than sit on top of the snow.

You mean like this? My street hardly ever gets plowed. Maybe 3 days after it snows if we are lucky

Yeah—I resolved to get dedicated snow tires for next year, and was just hoping that I could make it through the rest of this season with all-seasons. (Nope.)
